HANOVER, Md., Jan. 27, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Brekford Corp. (the "Company") (OTCQB:BFDI), a leading homeland technology service provider of fully integrated vehicle installation services, rugged mobile technology solutions, and traffic safety solutions geared towards mission critical operations. Brekford is pleased to announce the City of Laurel has increased their installation of Speed Enforcement cameras from 1 unit to five units in order to protect its school children and the citizens of Laurel.

According to Police Chief Richard McLaughlin, as the first camera was being installed on Cherry Lane across from Laurel High School, police clocked drivers going well over the allotted 12-mph limit that the camera allows before it is activated. "People were going 65 mph in a 30-mph zone as we were putting the camera up on Cherry Lane, which tells me we definitely have a problem there," McLaughlin said. "We (police officers) were on the curb and they still didn't slow down. That's atrocious and a total disrespect for speed laws."

Two cameras were already deployed and Chief McLaughlin said three more cameras have been added this week. "From 11:30 a.m. on the first day until 8:00 p.m., there were more than 800 violations on Cherry Lane and that was without the morning rush-hour traffic," Chief McLaughlin said. "When they told me, all I could say was 'Wow,' because I knew speeding was a problem there but I didn't realize it was this bad. We thought we'd get 1,000 violations a week, not per day at one location." The cameras are mobile and will be moved around periodically and those clocked speeding by the cameras will receive $40 tickets in the mail.

State legislators approved speed cameras as a way to make school zones safer for students, especially those who walk to school. To that effect, the cameras will only be activated weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The City Council members approved the contract for the speed cameras on Nov. 8, 2011. By state law, the cameras can only be placed within a half-mile or less of designated school zones.

C.B. Brechin, the CEO for Brekford, states, "Speed is a major factor in and around school zones, and the safety of our children is our number one concern. Brekford will continue to play a major role in the speed enforcement arena. Our program is designed to assist any municipality with a speed enforcement concern to protect its citizens."

Mr. Brechin continued by stating, "Mayor Craig Moe and Chief McLaughlin continue to be forward thinkers in protecting the children, citizens and residents of Prince George's County.  We applaud their effort and are honored to be a partner for the safety of their constituents.  Brekford continues to expand our traffic safety solutions through automated photo enforcement throughout Prince George's County, the rest of Maryland and will continue to expand throughout the country."
